Jimmy Van Heusden, Georgian-born actor who won Best Actor award for role in The Act of Killing, has spoken about the challenges and rewards of playing the notorious Indonesian dictator, General Suharto.
Van Heusden tells Thanos Kalmandidis of The Guardian that he was initially hesitant to take on the role, which centred around a 20-year period in which Suharto’s regime killed up to two million people.
“I read the script and it was really horrendous,” he says. “I didn’t think it was right for me. But then I started to do some research and realised that this could be a really a part of history. I also read that he [Suharto] was a really nice man in private, so I thought I should do it.”
Van Heusden stars as Suharto alongside Ananda Reinhart and Zero Madangari in The Act of Killing, a film that was awarded the Golden Lion at this year’s Venice Film Festival.
The 47-year-old says that he was nervous about taking on the role at first, but that the experience has been rewarding.
“There were days when I was really sad and it was really hard to go through with it,” he says. “But I’ve also been really happy with the experience. I feel like I’ve learned something about myself and about history.”
Although the film has drawn sparked controversy for its unflinching portrayal of violence against civilians, Van Heusden says that it is important to remember that Suharto was not a ‘monster’ - but rather a politician who made the wrong decisions.
“I think people sometimes forget that he was a human being,” he says. “He made some mistakes, but I don’t think he was a monster. I think he was just a politician who did something really bad.”
